This national fabric and craft retailer wanted to simplify and improve access to information across all of its departments. For this client, updating the merchandising system was key so that managers could make more timely decisions and improve the company's inventory positions. But they also wanted a system that would integrate merchandising with human resources and finance. To get ready for the next century, selection and implementation of an enterprisewide solution would be the best course of action.
Solution
With the help of LakeWest Group, the client selected SAP because of its integrated, retail-specific applications. To ensure a successful implementation, LakeWest Group defined user and business requirements, performed a cost/benefit analysis, confirmed the business vision/strategy, identified system parameters and modifications, and assisted in the development of the test approach and user documentation. LakeWest Group's integrated, cross-functional business team tracked issues throughout the organization, and our in-depth retail knowledge enabled us to recommended superior solutions.
Results
Although installing the right software package was a critical part of the client's strategy to become a first-class competitor, software was only part of our solution. LakeWest Group's deep retail knowledge enabled us to recommend business strategies and process improvements that were necessary to ensure successful implementation. As a result of our strategy, technology and process solutions, the project was the first major SAP implementation in the retail industry. Some of the benefits the client plans to receive include improved inventory accuracy, better in stocks, better inventory turns, lower inventory carrying costs, improved margins, improved billing accuracy, more effective promotions, the ability to get the right merchandise to the right stores, and better information on which to base decisions.
Strategic Systems Implementation Plan & Technology Integration
Assisted a large, highly recognizable specialty retailer of farming goods with the development of a strategic information systems plan. LakeWest Group was also engaged to assist with the initial phase of the implementation of the new ERP system and electronic commerce application integration. The firm provided assistance with the development of an implementation plan, review of the current processes and system capabilities, identification of gaps, definition of system modifications, and the training of staff to exploit the newly installed technology.
Global Technology Assessment
Led the development of a strategic information systems plan for an international Italian luxury goods manufacturer, wholesaler, and retailer. Defined requirements to internationalize an enterprisewide retail software application package. Assessment included review of manufacturing, distribution, inventory, financial and store processes (franchised and company-owned), and the development of a worldwide sales organization model.
Technology Implementation
Assisted in the creation and implementation of a state-of-the-art web site for children's toys and books. Activities included systems analysis, managing the quality assurance function, designing a promotional subsystem, and transitioning to the Oracle database and toolset.
